Covid-19: quarantine, tests, entry ban ... here are the rules in force in Europe

2020-08-15T16:10:11.636Z

On the continent, everyone is doing their part to contain the epidemic. At the risk of not always being very clear.

Entry ban in one country, compulsory test in another ... For several weeks, restrictive measures have returned to Europe, faced with the rebound of the epidemic.

On the Old Continent, the number of cases has indeed been rising in recent weeks but, for the moment, not the number of deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), which is worried about a relaxation, in particular for young people.

In any case, getting around has rarely been so complicated. Are you lost? We take stock of the rules in force at the borders. Be careful if you travel: the country you come from takes precedence over your nationality. In other words, all restrictive measures may be imposed on you.

Those who impose a quarantine

With this decision, the United Kingdom stung Paris to the quick. From now on, travelers from France will have to remain confined at home for fourteen days. The same goes for people returning from the Netherlands and Malta. Italy imposes the same treatment on travelers who have stayed in or transited through Bulgaria or Romania in the 14 days preceding their arrival in Italy.

Germany has classified a European country, Spain, with the exception of the Canary Islands, which are popular with German tourists, in countries at risk. It made quarantine and testing on arrival mandatory.

All travelers returning from a country outside the Schengen area and the European Union must undergo a quarantine and test in Belgium . It is also mandatory for travelers returning from Malta, parts of Bulgaria, Romania, Spain and Leicester, England.

The situation is getting more complicated in Finland . A ten-day quarantine and not 14 days is imposed on all travelers returning from a country outside the European Union. “Entry quarantine conditions do not apply to travelers who reside in EU / EEA / Schengen Area countries with less than 20 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last two weeks, and less than five for one hundred positive tests on average per week over the past two weeks ”, we can read on the website of the European Commission.
