Saudi journalist: "UAE agreement - breakthrough"
The popular newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat prominently covered the peace agreement announced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday. The headline in the paper was devoted to the breakthrough. "Trump has sponsored the launch of relations between the United Arab Emirates and Israel," it read. It was further noted that while Israel agreed not to apply its sovereignty in the West Bank, the world welcomed and the Palestinians expressed opposition. Each page 4 was devoted to the coverage of what was described as an "agreement to normalize the relationship."
On the back page of the newspaper, Saudi journalist Mashari al-Jaidi claimed in an opinion piece that the agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel is a "breach of the illusion barrier." He said the UAE had achieved a major political, psychological and security breakthrough in the Middle East following the announcement of the historic agreement between the UAE and Israel.
