Concern in Israel and the US: The UN Security Council last night (Friday-Saturday) rejected the US proposal to extend the arms embargo on Iran indefinitely. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo responded: "This will allow the world's largest sponsor of terrorism to continue buying and selling lethal weapons. We will soon impose new sanctions on Iran, in the coming days."

The arms embargo on Iran, which began in 2007, is expected to end on October 18 this year. Secretary of State Pompeo demanded in April this year to extend the arms embargo, following growing concern in the US administration and in Israel that following the corona crisis, which is taking many victims from the Iranian people, Tehran will decide to accelerate their nuclear project.

Intelligence sources recently expressed concern that US sanctions on Iran, which have led to a crisis in the country, will lead the Tehran government to look for an alternative way to maintain its status through the nuclear project. Recently, following the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal, Iran announced that it no longer considered itself committed to enriching uranium. The fear is that following the lifting of sanctions, Iran could purchase tanks, aircraft and state-of-the-art military equipment from Russia and China. .

vote tonight opposed the proposal of China and Russia, 11 other companies in the Council, including France, Britain and Germany, abstained. U.S., only the Dominican Republic has supported the extension of the embargo.

Pompeo said in a vote on the council: "Israel and six Gulf states have supported the extension of the agreement because they know that if it ends - Iran will spread even greater chaos and destruction. The Security Council has chosen to ignore it. The United States will never abandon its friends in the region.

Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Ardan, sharply attacked the decision in a Twitter tweet: "The Security Council has failed in its responsibility to maintain international peace and security. This decision will further destabilize the Middle East and increase the spread of violence around the world."

Iran's ambassador to the UN, Majed Takt Rabanchi, threatened before the vote that, "Imposing further sanctions on Iran will be taken seriously - our response options are limitless. "The United States or any entity that assists it in its illegal conduct will be held accountable." After the vote, Rabanchi wrote: "The results of the vote show that the United States is isolated. The Security Council resolution says no to US unilateralism.
