In the preface to La Révolte des masses that he wrote for French readers, the philosopher Ortega y Gasset recounts how, during a stay in Paris, he realized that he did not know anyone in the capital, “nobody… except the statues” : “Among them,” he relates then, “ I met old friendships which had stimulated my intimate life or had been its lasting masters.
