A funeral was to take place in the cemetery in Miesbach on Thursday. Before that could happen, the deceased suddenly disappeared - the Miesbach police are investigating.

  • An 86-year-old was to be buried in the cemetery in Miesbach on Thursday .
  • But before the ceremony could begin, a stranger stole the urn containing the man's remains .
  • The Miesbach police started the investigation - they are still ongoing at the moment.

Update from August 16, 2020, 8:31 p.m.: Robert Ellmann wanted to carry his dad to the family grave with his own hands . “I was with him when he died, so I wanted to accompany him on the way to his final resting place,” says the 51-year-old in a fragile voice. But it shouldn't come to that: When the mourners returned to the funeral hall in the forest cemetery after the service in the Miesbach parish church, the urn with the ashes of Wilhelm Ellmann (86) had disappeared! The flowers, the photo, everything was still there, “but papa was gone,” says Ellmann. The son finds only one word for what he and his family felt at that moment: absolute bewilderment and deep pain."Now we can't say goodbye."

When Ellmann and his partner came to the Miesbach cemetery last Thursday at around 1.30 p.m., they were sad but collected. You enter the funeral hall, place a flower arrangement in front of the urn, and quietly prepare to say goodbye. Robert Ellmann's sister Annette Egger is also there. She gently strokes the urn, a final affectionate greeting. Then the family makes their way to church. Shortly afterwards, however, the deceased received another visit: A good friend said that the funeral service would take place in the cemetery, says Ellmann. "He still saw Papa's urn."

The family has been racking their brains since Thursday about what happened in the few minutes after that. What is certain is that the urn was stolen by an unknown perpetrator shortly before the burial. At first, family members believe in a macabre joke. They search the cemetery. But the papa cannot be found. The Catholic community officer Michaela Meier, who celebrated the service and was supposed to lead the funeral, tries to support the relatives in this emotional situation. “This incident hits me in the heart too,” says Meier. And Miesbach's pastor Michael Mannhardt is speechless because of the incident in the cemetery. "It is shocking for everyone involved", it is a "terrible situation".

When the initial excitement has subsided, the relatives call the police , who are investigating into disturbing the peace of the dead. At the same time, in his desperation, Robert Ellmann started an appeal on Facebook. In a poignant video, he asks for clues about his papa. The son is not concerned with punishing the perpetrator. He just wants his papa back - and wants to know why someone did such a bad thing to his family. "I would like to have a reason, even as an anonymous letter."

He rules out a personal background . He couldn't imagine anyone wanting to harm his papa or his family. The 51-year-old thinks it is more likely that the thief is targeting the material value of the urn. Maybe the perpetrator suspected something of value inside. Robert Ellmann, on the other hand, is concerned with the ashes. “I want to know what happened to my papa.” Even if the thief has scattered the remains, the son wants to know the exact location. "No matter where dad is now: I want to finally say goodbye." Sebastian Grauvogl
