Berlin - The corona pandemic is keeping the world in suspense. The federal government is also constantly taking new measures and adapting its strategy to prevent the virus from spreading. While the borders were completely closed at times, vacation and other trips abroad have been possible again since mid-May. However, the worldwide corona situation is under constant observation and evaluation.

Depending on the infection situation, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), in cooperation with the federal government, classifies certain states and regions as corona risk areas . Anyone who nevertheless travels to these areas or goes on vacation must expect to have to take a corona test when returning to Germany. Since the beginning of August, a test has been mandatory for those returning from risk areas . If this is positive, there is a 14-day quarantine .

The following map shows whether a country is classified as a risk area (red) or not (gray). According to the RKI, the respective evaluation is determined on the basis of two levels. On the one hand, it records the states and regions in which more than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants were registered in the last seven days . In addition, further characteristics are used for areas that fall below the limit value .

Criteria such as the test capacity, the number of tests carried out per inhabitant, the measures taken and the reliability of the information play a role in the assessment of a state. This assessment is largely made by the Foreign Office on the basis of information from German missions abroad. In addition, the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Home Affairs are  involved in the assessment of the risk areas.

The mandatory tests are free of charge . Even those who come back from a non-risk area and would like to be tested voluntarily can do this free of charge by presenting a receipt such as a hotel bill. Those who have been tested have to isolate themselves at their destination until the result is available. If it turns out positive, a 14-day quarantine obligation applies. Even with a negative result, depending on the state, another test may be mandatory before the quarantine is lifted.

Where does the data come from? We obtain information on whether a state is a risk area or not from the Robert Koch Institute. We integrate these into the cards, permanently check the data and keep the information up to date.
