The police detained for questioning six officials in the Eilat municipality on suspicion of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. The affair, which began as an undercover investigation, was released today (Monday).

Three suspects were arrested at the end of their interrogation and three were released on restrictive conditions. The police said that the detainees will be brought to the Magistrate's Court in Be'er Sheva tomorrow for a hearing on extending their detention.

The covert investigation against those officials lasted several months, during which evidence was gathered against the suspects. The investigation raised suspicion of accepting bribes from them, which they received as part of their job.

The announcement of this corruption case in the local government comes against the background of the police decision today to prosecute the mayor of Kiryat Motzkin, Haim Tzuri, on suspicion of a series of corruption offenses in two cases. According to the police statement, an evidentiary basis has been formed against Zuri and other people involved for bribery, fraud and breach of trust, receiving anything by fraud as well as offenses relating to the protection of privacy.

The investigation revealed that for several years the database, which is managed by the municipality, which includes the details of the city's residents, has been used in order to promote Zuri's political needs in the election campaigns. There was also a suspicion that public funds were being used to upgrade the reservoir for its own needs. In addition, information was gathered about the political positions of the city’s residents.

Another case that was revealed in the investigation against Mayor Zuri dealt with offenses in the field of chastity and public corruption. Suspicion arose that before the 2018 mayoral election date, Zuri, through another source, was active in his opponent's election campaign - and in return for benefits worth money, he received valuable political information about him.
