(CNN Spanish) - María Milagros Charbonier, a member of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives for the New Progressive Party, was arrested this Monday by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), accused of charges related to alleged bribes and kickbacks, of which his version is unknown until now.
The FBI press spokeswoman in Puerto Rico, Limari Cruz Rubio, confirmed Charbonier's arrest to CNN.
Stephen Muldrow, head of the Puerto Rico Federal Prosecutor's Office, indicated this Monday at a press conference that a federal grand jury from the District of Puerto Rico issued a 13-count indictment against Representative María Milagros Charnonier on August 7.
The charges Charbonier is charged with are: “conspiracy, theft of federal funds, kickbacks and kickbacks, and honest services wire fraud. Charbonier also faces two counts of money laundering. In addition, he faces an obstruction of justice charge, ”Muldrow said.
Charbonier's attorney, Sandra Torres, confirmed to CNN that her client pleaded not guilty and would be released on bail on Monday.
Since 2016, Charbonier served as president of the Legal Commission, which includes the revision of the Civil and Criminal Code, after arriving in the Chamber in 2012.
