Wave of shootings around the country kills dozens over the weekend

2020-08-17T02:25:01.042Z

New York City; Chicago, Illinois; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and San Antonio and Austin, Texas, are just a few of the cities that reported deadly shootings this weekend. If this trend continues, 2020 could become the year with the highest number of gun homicides since 1999.

Multiple shootings in various cities across the country left dozens dead and significantly more injured this weekend, part of a recent wave of gun violence that has not been seen since the late 1990s.

Amid the debate over the brutality and institutionalized racism in police departments around the country that led to the murder of George Floyd and the coronavirus pandemic, several of the country's major cities have seen a rise in homicides with guns fire.

Following the trend that has already left 11,161 deaths so far this year in the United States, 2020 could become the deadliest year in gun-related homicides since 1999 , according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, in English).

Here's a state-of-the-art tally of the shootings over the weekend.

Texas

In San Antonio at least three people were injured after being shot, including the one with the gun, at a flea market Sunday morning.

Police still do not know how many people were involved or if there are any suspects in custody.

According to the market manager, the incident started as a family dispute between suppliers and customers, but it is unclear how the incident escalated.

In Cedar Park , an Austin suburb, three police officers received gunshot wounds Sunday during a confrontation with a man who barricaded himself in a house.

Officers were responding to a phone call when they were shot from a house. All three officers are hospitalized and stable, according to the Cedar Park Police Department.

The authorities have asked residents of the area not to leave their homes while they work to neutralize the subject who barricaded himself in the house.

In Houston, a bar fight sparked a shooting that killed at least one person on Saturday, police said.

At least one person was injured during the confrontation between two groups. Police suspect it is a fight between motorcycle gangs. The fatal victim was 44 years old and there was also at least one gunshot wound.

New York

In less than 48 hours, at least five people died in New York City, bringing the total to 14 for the entire week.

This Sunday around 2 am, a 47-year-old man died after being shot twice in the head in Brooklyn, according to New York police.

Hours earlier, on Saturday night, a 27-year-old man was shot in the torso on Beach Avenue. And at 1 a.m. that same day, but in Harlem, a 30-year-old man died the same way: shot in the torso.

About two hours later, John Jeff, a 28-year-old off-duty police officer , died after being shot 11 times after leaving a party in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens.

"There is an investigation into this cowardly attack," confirmed Mayor Bill de Blasio on his Twitter account.

The city police registered 55 shootings last week that left 69 victims. In the past four weeks, shootings have nearly tripled from the same period last year.

For both Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York Police Commissioner Dermot Shea, the increase in shootings is due to a wide variety of factors, including a slowdown in the judicial system, the activity of the gangs and repressed rage after months of quarantine orders for the pandemic.

Illinois

In Chicago, at least four people died and 39 others were injured in the shootings that took place this weekend.

A man in his twenties was found dead by police in an alley on Saturday, inside a car sitting in the driver's seat and shot to the temple.

The first fatality in the shootings this weekend was a 48-year-old man who was shot in the chest on Friday night. He was taken to Christ Hospital by authorities but passed away shortly after. An 18-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy were also killed in two separate shootings Saturday night.

Assistant Chief of Police Paul Neudigate said Sunday that these crimes appear to be "separate and independent incidents, but horrible and tragic." In none of the cases was information on the suspects available.

Police said the department would shift officers from other assignments to increase the number of uniformed officers in affected communities and would ask federal prosecutors and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives "to target shooters. repeat offenders and aggressively press charges for illegal weapons.
