There is now a new two-story parking facility at the Freising station: there is space for 874 bikes. It is one of the projects with which the train station is to become the train station of the future.

Freising - The train station in Freising has been proclaimed a future station by the DB. Part of this project was handed over to its destination on Tuesday: the new two-story bicycle parking facility, which now offers space for 874 bikes. The measure, which was implemented as part of the Bahn's Bike + Ride offensive, is not the first parking facility of its kind in Bavaria, but the largest. A reason to celebrate.

Increasing the number of parking spaces "urgently needed"

Mobility advisor Karl-Heinz Freitag emphasized that this increase in the number of parking spaces for bicycles from 450 to 874 was "urgently necessary" and an important component in the train station and mobility concept of the city of Freising. Spoke it and showed that even with a lumbago you can stow a bike on the upper floor.

Mareike Schoppe, Head of Station Management at DB Station & Service AG Munich, emphasized: "874 parking spaces - that's a brand." The aim of the Bike + Ride offensive is to create 100,000 new bicycle parking spaces at train stations across Germany by 2022. The Federal Environment Ministry and the Free State funded these measures in Bavaria with up to 80 percent. Around 100 projects have already been tied down - and that means 20,000 such new parking spaces.

Freising is the only Upper Bavarian train station to receive funding

The only train station in Upper Bavaria that can benefit from this subsidy is Freising, emphasized CSU member of the Bundestag Erich Irlstorfer, who represented Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer at the inauguration. The entire Bike + Ride offensive is "already a signal that the cooperation between Deutsche Bahn, the federal government, the Free State and municipalities is not just an empty phrase," said Irlstorfer. This facility is particularly important for Freising as a university town with a high proportion of bicycles in traffic.

Freising's climate protection manager Marie Hüneke reported that the first ideas and plans went back to 2011. But there were always high, too high hurdles. It was only the Bike + Ride offensive that enabled the necessary “drive” for implementation. When the application for funding was made, costs of 300,000 euros were assumed, and 150,000 euros ended up, according to the good news from Hünekes. So that the new duplex parkers for bikes could also be installed, the municipal building yard had to remove the bikes that were still parked there. There were around 400, according to the deputy building yard manager Markus Tafelmeier. They will be stored in Tuching for three months, then scrapped or auctioned.

Underpass to Lerchenfeld planned

The view was also directed towards the future: on Friday mentioned considerations to build an underpass for buses and bicycles near the train station in order to better connect the city with Lerchenfeld, Hüneke revealed that they were also considering building such a duplex on the Lerchenfeld side of the train station -Bike parking facility to be built. Schoppe talked about what to expect at Freising's future station: for example, a building on the station forecourt or another bike repair station. Schoppe emphasized: "You can be curious about that."
