The Chinese city of Wuhan, the source of the corona virus, was the first in the world to be shut down, probably the most rigid, but now it seems to be back to full routine. Thousands of passers-by gathered at a water park in honor of an electronic music festival, without wearing masks or keeping their distance.

Over the past weekend, the Mia Beach water park has been packed with passersby crowding and moving to the sounds of music while cooling off in the water. Others watched tubes crammed into the pool. The park had already opened in late June, but the rains that fell in the city left residents in their homes. On average, about 15,000 people come to the park on weekends, about half the amount in August last year. The park offers discounts to some visitors.

Such scenes are still inconceivable in large parts of the world, which are still battling the plague. More than 21 million people have been diagnosed with the virus, and tens of thousands of new cases are still reported daily in the United States, Brazil and India. However, Wuhan, who began returning to routine in early April after 76 days of firm closure, has not reported any new cases since mid-May. The city, the capital of Hubei Province, is home to about 11 million people.

After the brief eruption in mid-May, with six cases in a residential community in the city, massive tests were conducted on about 6.5 million people. According to official data in China, about 60% of all 84,000 cases in the country were diagnosed in Wuhan, where the virus was first discovered in December. On January 23, a full and unprecedented closure was imposed on the city, and all entrances to and exits from it were closed. Residents were forbidden to leave their homes even to purchase groceries.

Other cities in China have taken similar steps, and tens of millions have been under severe restrictions. However, as early as March, Chinese President Xi Jinping Luhan arrived to demonstrate confidence that the virus, which had meanwhile begun to rage elsewhere in the world, was under Chinese control.
