Military forces in Mali launched a military coup against the government today (Tuesday) and arrested the president and prime minister. According to various reports, soldiers arrested senior ministers and officers and took over television and radio stations. Foreign embassies have issued warnings of the situation. According to reports, gunfire was heard outside the prime minister's office.

Local residents and security officials told Reuters that there had been an exchange of men at a base in the town of Katy, located about 15 km outside the capital Maco.

The West African bloc, ECOWAS, which tried to bridge the gap between the government and the opposition, said military forces in Mali had started a revolt and urged them to return to their bases.

Since June, opponents of President Ibrahim Bobkar Keita have led huge demonstrations against him due to the country’s security chaos and corruption. According to UN and human rights activists, at least 14 people have been killed in demonstrations.

Foreign and Western countries fear a continuing crisis in the country could hurt the fight against terrorist organizations in the region, many of which operate in Mali. To his opponents and the recommendations of a delegation on behalf of the leaders of the region will stop the threshold against him.
