(CNN) - Patricia and Mark McCloskey, the St. Louis couple who pointed guns at protesters in late June, are scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention next week, an aide familiar with the situation told CNN Monday. .

News of the couple's long-awaited appearance, first reported by The Washington Post, comes as Republicans prepare for an unorthodox convention, as part of efforts to energize voters during a pandemic and in the past three months. of the Bell. Democrats kicked off their party's national convention on Monday night led by former first lady Michelle Obama, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, among others.

A Trump Victory spokesperson and a Republican official confirmed to CNN later Monday that former Covington Catholic student Nick Sandmann; Andrew Pollack, father of the Parkland Meadow Pollack shooting victim; anti-abortion activist Abby Johnson; South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem and Pennsylvania Congressional candidate Sean Parnell will also be among the Republican convention speakers. The lineup, which is still in the making, was first reported by Breitbart News.

The McCloskeys drew national spotlight in late June after they were seen in a viral video brandishing weapons outside their mansion to protesters walking on a private street en route to protest outside the residence of the Mayor of St. Louis. The Missouri couple were charged in July with illegal use of a weapon, a class E felony.

The White House has defended the couple on multiple occasions, and press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters at the time that President Donald Trump "said that what is happening to the McCloskeys is absolutely absurd."

In videos obtained by CNN, Mark McCloskey holds a long rifle and Patricia McCloskey holds a pistol as protesters, protesting Mayor Lyda Krewson's decision to publish the names and addresses of people in favor of police reform, walked outside of home. Portland Place, the private street where the McCloskeys live, is near Krewson's home.

Daniel Shular, a local reporter, took one of the videos and said he saw the entire approximately 10-minute-long incident unfold. About 500 protesters were crossing Portland Place, according to Shular, to avoid closures of nearby streets that prevented access to the mayor's home.

"A door was opened by the gate on Portland Place and the protesters went through it to cross the neighborhood and reach the Krewson house," he told CNN.

That's when Shular says the McCloskeys left the house with the guns. At one point in Shular's 31-second video, Patricia McCloskey points the gun in the direction of the protesters. In several videos, it appears that the McCloskeys and the protesters exchange words, but it is not clear what is said.

Mark McCloskey has defended his actions towards the protesters. Last month he said he was "in imminent fear that they would pass over me, that they would kill me."

«I was a person who feared for my life, protected my wife, my house, my home, my livelihood. I was the victim of a mob that came in through the gate, ”he told CNN's Chris Cuomo at the time.

McCloskey said it is "ridiculous" to consider him the face of opposition to the Black Lives Matter movement after the incident.

'I didn't care what color they were. I didn't care what his motivation was, ”he said. "I was scared. They attacked me ».

CNN's Madeline Holcombe, Paul P. Murphy, Alisha Ebrahimji, and Maegan Vazquez contributed to this report.
