Pope says vaccine should be for everyone, especially the poor

Pope Francis said Wednesday during his general audience that a COVID-19 vaccine should be for everyone, especially the poor.

“How sad it would be if access to the ovid-19 vaccine were a priority for the wealthiest. It would be sad if the vaccine became the property of this or that nation and was not universal for all, "said the pope.

The pandemic "has exposed the plight of the poor and the great inequality that reigns in the world," the pope said, adding that the response to the pandemic is, therefore, "twofold."

“On the one hand, it is imperative to find a cure for a small but terrible virus that is bringing the entire world to its knees. On the other hand, a great virus must be cured, that of social injustice, inequality of opportunities, marginalization and the lack of protection of the weakest ”, said the pontiff, highlighting that“ in this double curative response there is an option that, According to the Gospel, it cannot be absent: the preferential option for the poor.

“We are all concerned about the social consequences of the pandemic. All of us. Many want to return to normality and resume economic activities, "said the Pope, warning that" the pandemic is a crisis and you do not come out of a crisis the same: you can come out better or worse.

Charity and social assistance are important, the pope stressed, "but we have to go further and find solutions to the problems that create the need for social assistance" and today "we have the opportunity to build something different", an economy that " it does not poison ”our society.

“What a scandal it would be if all the economic aid that we are observing - mainly with public money - were destined to save those industries that do not contribute to the inclusion of the excluded, to the promotion of the last, to the common good and to the care of the creation, ”he added.

Cuba plans clinical trials of possible vaccine against covid-19

By Patrick Oppmann

Cuban researchers will begin clinical trials of a possible vaccine against the new coronavirus next week, according to a report by the state news service Prensa Latina published on Tuesday.

The potential vaccine, called “Sovereign 01”, will be tested in 676 people between 19 and 80 years old.

The trials will take place between August 24 and January 11, with the results available in February 2021, reported Prensa Latina.

Moderna faces key problem in 1:37 vaccine trials

On Monday, Cuban state media showed images of the meeting of Cuban President Miguel DĂaz-Canel with vaccine researchers.

A 60-year-old US trade embargo makes it difficult for many countries to associate with Cuba or even sell drugs to the island. This vaccine is being developed by Cuban government researchers at the Finlay Institute in Havana.

Brazilian indigenous protesters on Tuesday defied a court order and blocked a key highway for the second time in 24 hours, after reopening it together with federal police that same day.

The town of Kayapó Mekrãgnotire first blocked a major highway near the city of Novo Progresso in the northern state of Pará on Monday, demanding medical assistance, medical supplies and food to fight the covid-19 pandemic.

They also demanded an end to deforestation and illegal activities on their territories, according to a statement obtained by CNN from the Kabu Institute, an NGO created to manage indigenous peoples and inspect the region's forests.

Later, a federal judge ordered protesters to clear roads or face a daily fine of 10,000 reais (US $ 1,800)

By Tuesday morning, indigenous protesters reopened the road, but warned that if the government did not participate in talks regarding their demands, they would block it again.

On Tuesday, Brazilian representative Joenia Wapichana issued an official letter to Brazilian Vice President Hamilton MourĂŁo, urging him to initiate a dialogue with the KayapĂł MekrĂŁgnotire people about their demands.

Indigenous leaders argue that proximity to the road brought the coronavirus to their villages, the Kabu Institute told CNN on Monday.

The first cases of coronavirus among the KayapĂł MekrĂŁgnotire occurred as a result of their contact with urban populations and the presence of illegal miners on their reserves.

At least 21,000 indigenous people in Brazil have been infected with covid-19 and more than 600 have died, according to the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB).

Australia reaches agreement with AstraZeneca for possible coronavirus vaccine

By Angus Watson

Australia reached an agreement with the UK-based pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to access a possible vaccine against Covid-19 should the trials be successful.

AstraZeneca is currently developing a vaccine in partnership with the University of Oxford and has already reached agreements with various governments, including the US and UK, to produce at least 2 billion doses. The first deliveries start in September.

Under the agreement, Australians would receive the vaccine for free, an Australian government statement said on Tuesday.

"If this vaccine is successful, we will manufacture and supply vaccines immediately on our own and it will be free to 25 million Australians," Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in the statement.

"However, there is no guarantee that this vaccine, or any other, will be successful, so we continue our discussions with many parties around the world while supporting our own researchers at the same time to find a vaccine."

On Wednesday, Morrison acknowledged that there were "great obstacles" to producing a successful vaccine, but said the AstraZeneca-Oxford project is "one of the best prospects in the world today."

There is no declared cost of the Australian government agreement with AstraZeneca; however, the Australian government has indicated that it will spend billions of dollars on its vaccination strategy.

The strategy includes the purchase of 100 million needles, syringes and other consumables from the US company Becton Dickinson, with an order already placed for 24.7 million Australian dollars (US $ 17.9 million).
