Lebanon will impose a renewed closure for two weeks in the country, in order to stop the rise in viral morbidity that comes about two weeks after the devastating explosion in Beirut. As part of the closure, from next Friday the markets, shopping centers, gyms and pools will be closed, as well as a general curfew will be announced at night.

Officials last Monday reported 456 new cases of corona diagnosed in the country, as well as two deaths. Yesterday, 421 more cases were diagnosed in the country.

Lebanese Health Minister Hemed Hassan has warned that hospitals are facing a shortage of places for new patients. "The situation is unbearable," he said earlier this week in an interview with a local radio station. Six large hospitals and 20 clinics suffered partial or heavy damage as a result of the huge explosion in the port of Beirut, in which at least 178 people were killed.

The medical facilities still in operation and field hospitals established following the blast are treating thousands of trauma and burn victims, as well as more severely injured, as a result of the blast. Beyond that, some 300,000 people have been left homeless, many of whom now live in damaged buildings, temporary sites or shared shelters, with limited access to water and sanitation. The disaster added to the difficult situation facing Lebanon, due to the severe economic slowdown that the Corona epidemic has exacerbated.

The World Health Organization complimented Lebanon last week, saying it had done a "very impressive job" in dealing with the corona virus. At least 107 people have died from the virus in the country since February. Before the explosion, however, there was an upward trend in the daily number of new cases, and the government planned to impose a partial closure, which would help manage hospital congestion.

Since then, there has been a further increase in virus infection rates, and these figures are expected to rise further in the coming weeks, as many people are failing to take the necessary precautions, such as the rules of social distance.

The UN expressed concern recently because of the high risk exposure of health care workers to the virus, because it was overcrowded hospital emergency departments, lack of personal protective equipment, increased vulnerability of the population and reducing the number of beds and ICU capabilities.

UN clarified that the purchase of test kits and community based surveillance among people Who have recently lost their homes, as well as providing protective, antiseptic and hygienic measures to vulnerable groups, are critical to stopping the increased morbidity.

The World Health Organization has shipped nearly 25 tons of various protective, disinfecting and hygienic products to Beirut, and the Lebanese Ministry of Health has set up clinics to conduct corona tests in two of the areas affected by the blast. Additional medical teams from around the world have also been asked by the World Health Organization to come to Lebanon, and to increase the treatment capabilities in field hospitals established due to the explosion.
