A Kremlin spokesman said the Russian government has for now ruled out offering military assistance to the regime of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. However, the spokesman indicated that there are attempts at "direct intervention" in that country and that they treat the situation as an "internal matter" of Russia. Lukashenko was victorious in the presidential elections on August 9, the results of which have sparked demonstrations in that nation.
