As every year, the summer barely over, the first novels of the new school year are appearing in bookstores and on the gondola heads of supermarkets. For this 2020 vintage, we were assured from the June solstice that there would be fewer novelties, due to the health crisis. It is not, or close to it. According to the score of our colleagues from the professional weekly Livres Hebdo, a little more than 500 novels are expected between mid-August and the end of September - down slightly compared to 2019 -, i.e. more than 360 French novels and 145 foreign titles. It is the latter who pay the heaviest price, with around forty fewer translations compared to the same period last year. This reluctance which resembles cowardice is even more flagrant for the young talents of tomorrow, since the publishers only offer 65 first novels against more than 82 last year.
Almost absence of historical figures
