Donald Trump has returned to the fray with his speech against immigrants. This Tuesday, the president of the United States traveled to Yuma (Arizona), on the border with Mexico, to promote the construction of the border wall in a campaign event. Trump has taken up the old xenophobic phrases he used in 2015 to attack Mexico, when he announced that he would participate in the presidential elections the following year. “We have people entering this country. Some great people, some very bad too, and I mean murderers, rapists, really bad people. And they do not return, when we take them back to their countries, it may be Mexico, they do not return ”, he said this Tuesday at a rally at the Yuma airport.
The president has offered the recurring speech in which he accuses Mexico of indiscriminately allowing the entry of immigrants to the United States. It has also threatened to impose a "toll" on vehicles that cross a border crossing or a "tax" on remittances sent by Mexicans. Trump has embarked on a tour of several states in the same week as the Democratic National Convention and when some polls place him at a slight disadvantage compared to the Democratic candidate, Joe Biden.
Trump has recognized that the elections on November 3 will have a "tight" result and has encouraged his followers to convince other voters. "We need every vote because this is probably going to be very close," he said. This is the third time that the US president visits Yuma during 2020, the last time was in June, when he celebrated the construction of 400 kilometers of the wall. The border between the two countries measures 3,169 kilometers. This time, he has also announced that the border patrol union has endorsed his candidacy.
Trump's comments also come as the relationship between Mexico and the United States seemed mollified. In July, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador visited the White House, praised the American and celebrated the start of the Free Trade Agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada (T-MEC). So Trump avoided commenting on the wall. Mexico has increased surveillance at the border in the last year with the dispatch of the National Guard to the most sensitive points of the crossing and has agreed to collaborate with the United States to receive immigrants seeking asylum in Mexican territory while they await their hearings.
