The federal prosecutor's office has brought charges against a German citizen for membership in the jihadist militia "Islamic State" (IS). Zeynep G. is to answer before the Berlin Superior Court, the authority announced. According to investigators, the woman traveled to Syria in 2014 to live in IS-dominated territory. She was therefore married to two ISIS members who both died.

According to the indictment, G. initially married a Chechen IS fighter. She made it possible for him to fight for the militia. The man was killed in a battle in mid-2015. The accused then found shelter in an IS women's shelter and married an IS member who had come to Syria from Germany in autumn 2015. The man died in 2017, according to the indictment.

At the beginning of 2019 G. was picked up by Kurdish forces and taken to a refugee camp in northern Syria. From there she fled to Turkey at the beginning of this year, where she was put in detention. She was eventually deported to Germany and arrested at Frankfurt Airport in May. She has been in custody ever since.

With the then 33-year-old G. from Berlin, a 23-year-old IS sympathizer from Hamburg was deported from Turkey. The women had their four children with them, all of whom were born in the crisis area.
