Greece vacation: government continues to tighten corona measures

Update from August 20, 2020 : Not only in Croatia and Spain, but also in Greece, the number of infections with the corona virus is rising again. While the former two destinations have now been extensively or partially occupied with travel warnings, no Greek region has yet been classified as a risk area. Nevertheless, the Greek government is taking increased measures to contain the spread of the corona virus. Last week, therefore, there were stricter regulations - which have now been tightened.

On the island of Mykonos and the Chalkidiki peninsula, there is therefore a mask requirement from Friday, August 21, as the German Press Agency writes, citing the Greek civil defense. For the time being, until the end of August, mouth and nose protection must be worn indoors and outdoors . Concerts, celebrations, religious ceremonies, markets and gatherings of more than nine people in both Mykonos and Halkidiki are also prohibited until August 31. In restaurants there are only four people per table - six for family members.

The tightened measures were taken after a record number of 269 new infections had been registered. Numerous cases were noted in the two tourist regions.

The Greek government is reacting to the increased number of cases with tightening: Now all taverns, bars and discos in numerous regions of the country, including popular tourist areas such as Crete, Santorini or Mykonos , must close at midnight at the latest every day. This stricter regulation will initially apply until August 23, as a government spokeswoman in Athens announced. A traditional trade fair in Thessaloniki, whose partner country this year would have been Germany, has been canceled. It should take place from September 5th to 13th.

Furthermore, all people who arrive by land must show a negative Corona test from August 17th - it does not matter which country they are coming from. The submitted test must not be older than 72 hours. Nevertheless, entry from EU countries, including Germany, is still allowed. The previous rules still apply: At least 24 hours before entry, holidaymakers must register electronically and present a QR code. * Merkur.de is part of the nationwide Ippen-Digital editors network.
