(CNN) - Kamala Harris was formally confirmed as the Democrats' choice for vice president, which is the first woman of black and South Asian origin to be chosen in a major party presidential race.

Harris was one of the contenders for the Democratic nomination, and also stood out within the party when it came to questioning the candidates appointed by President Donald Trump in the Senate hearings.
The senator is the third woman selected as a vice presidential hopeful after Democrat Geraldine Ferraro in 1984 and Republican Sarah Palin in 2008.
