Statue of the company's founder Adam Opel in front of the main factory in Rüsselsheim: The company began long before the age of cars with sewing machines and bicycles
Photo: Frank Rumpenhorst / picture-alliance / dpaAs part of its austerity measures, Opel wants to sell larger parts of its factory premises in Rüsselsheim. According to a media report, this includes parking spaces and a large area on the river, as well as the company headquarters building that bears the name of the company's founder Adam Opel.
The "Wirtschaftswoche" reported on Thursday, citing insiders, that the sales plans are already being implemented. A spokesman for the PSA subsidiary said on Thursday that the goal was to achieve "a sustainable and competitive line-up at all of our locations". The area at the Rüsselsheim location is disproportionately large - also in comparison to other automobile plants. "Just three years ago our factory premises were larger than the Principality of Monaco."

The goal is to "compress areas and separate us from areas that are no longer needed," continued Opel. Nothing has been specifically decided yet. Experts believe it is possible that Opel will sell the company headquarters to a leasing company and continue to use it.
Opel has been part of the French car company PSA since 2017. It then led the traditional German brand back into the black with a tough restructuring course.
