The health disaster did not take place. Everyone dreaded her. “Poor” Africa, with often failing health systems, seemed to be on a bad start to withstand the ravages of the coronavirus. For various reasons, including the youth of its population, the continent is so far the best in the world. In early August, a million cases were recorded there for 22,000 deaths. Less than in France, where the Covid-19 has claimed more than 30,000 victims. Out of 54 countries, only a few, like South Africa, have been hit hard.

Much more worrying is the looming political chaos, especially in French-speaking Africa. The coup d'etat which has just driven the Malian president from his Koulouba palace in Bamako must be observed in the light of all the crises shaking the region. Everywhere one looks, the leaders are in danger, rejected by a large part of the people. They pay for their own faults, mixtures of unconsciousness and incompetence, inordinate appetite for power
