Supporters of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is hospitalized in a coma, today (Friday) accused the Kremlin of thwarting his medical evacuation to Germany. They said the decision put his life in danger because the Siberian hospital where he is being treated lacks the appropriate equipment. This is at the time of the arrival of an air ambulance from Berlin that is supposed to evacuate.

Navalny, a fierce critic of President Vladimir Putin and his allies, is fighting for his life after drinking tea at an airport yesterday morning. His victims are convinced he was poisoned, but a doctor at the hospital where he is being treated said today that no traces of poison were found in his body.

Navalny's wife, Julia, and his spokeswoman, Kira Yarmish, attacked the Kremlin after the hospital director said his transfer would put his life in danger because he was still in a coma and his condition was unstable. Germany and France have offered help, but Europe is demanding clarifications from Moscow over what appears to be another settlement with one of Putin's rivals.

"The ban on the transfer of Nabalani is an attempt to kill him that is happening at the moment by doctors and the cunning authorities who have approved it," the spokeswoman wrote on social media. She said doctors had already confirmed his transfer, but changed their decision at the last minute. "The decision, of course, was not made by them, but by the Kremlin," Yarmesh said.

The Kremlin said yesterday that the medical authorities would consider any request to transfer Navalny to treatment in Europe and that it was still unclear what led to his flight crash. However, Alexander Murkhovsky, the hospital's director, told reporters that many legal questions needed to be resolved before he could be referred to European doctors. He said senior doctors had been flown in from Moscow to treat Nabalani, and were "no less good than their European counterparts".

He added that there are five possible diagnoses for Navalny's condition and that the results will be available within two days. He refused to answer the question of whether Navalny was indeed poisoned.

Navalny's team said a police officer told them that a particularly dangerous substance had been identified in his body, so much so that everyone around him was required to wear protective suits. His associates believe the authorities are trying to pull time so that all traces of the poison disappear.

Navalny, a lawyer and anti-corruption activist, was involved in investigations that revealed corruption cases at official levels. He is preparing for next month's regional elections in Russia, and together with his allies tried to help the candidates against the Kremlin. The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that the arrests of 44-year-old Navalny between 2012 and 2014 were politically motivated and violated his human rights. In Moscow this ruling was rejected.

He is currently the main spokesman in Russia against Putin, and in the last presidential election in 2018 he was disqualified from running due to his conviction for embezzlement. Navalny and his supporters argued that the trial against him was political. He has been imprisoned many times in recent years for short prison terms for organizing illegal demonstrations against the Kremlin.

Just the day before he collapsed, Navalny met with young supporters at a private meeting and was asked a familiar question: "Why are you not dead?". According to one participant, a villain smiled. "He even laughed at the fact that he had to give excuses as to why he was not dead yet," said Ilya Chumkov, one of 24 activists who met on Wednesday with a villain in the city of Tomsk. Afterwards, he recounted, "he became more serious and added that his death would not help Putin."

"He replied that it would not contribute to Putin. That it would make him (villainous) a hero," Chumkov said. Navalny has been attacked in the past by government supporters. In 2017, green and unidentified material was sprayed on it.

In Europe, it is suspected that Putin tried to send a message to his opponents from home in light of protests in neighboring Belarus, for fear that they would spread to the country as well.

When asked about the issue by White House reporters, US President Donald Trump said his administration was "examining the issue."
