The Federal Foreign Office has extended the travel warning in Belgium to Brussels. The website is currently warning against unnecessary tourist trips to the capital, Brussels and the province of Antwerp, due to the high number of infections. So far only the province of Antwerp has been affected in Belgium. Now the capital was added as a risk area.

The classification as a risk area means that returning holidaymakers in Germany are required to test for the corona virus. Until the result is available, travelers have to go into quarantine at home. The central criterion for classification as a risk area is that there have been more than 50 newly infected people per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days.

Political summer break ensures peace

Brussels also attracts many tourists, but as the so-called EU capital, it is primarily a destination for political trips. However, there is currently a political summer break - which is why it is relatively quiet in the city. There are currently no ministerial meetings, and the European Parliament is on hold.

Informal meetings of the EU defense and foreign ministers are planned for the coming week. Because Germany currently holds the EU Council Presidency, the Federal Government has invited to Berlin. The next ministerial meeting in Brussels is scheduled for September 21st and 22nd. Then Federal Minister of Agriculture Julia Klöckner (CDU) meets her colleagues from the other EU countries to negotiate the common agricultural reform.

A special EU summit is also planned for the same week. Then Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) would have to travel to Brussels again - unless the summit is held as a video conference. The next plenary session of the European Parliament is in mid-September, but in Strasbourg, France.
