The Likud intensified today (Friday) the attacks against senior blue and white officials, Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi and Justice Minister Avi Nissenkorn, accusing them of dragging the country to the elections. After a series of briefings against Ashkenazi, the party today (Friday) issued an official statement against Nissenkorn, demanding that he respond to allegations of a "deal" with Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, claiming he violates the coalition agreement in his opposition to establishing a new senior appointment mechanism. Also the appointments in the Ministry of Justice. On the other hand, the ministry clarified that no evidentiary basis was found to justify opening an investigation.

"Is Avi Nissenkorn dragging the country to the polls because of a secret deal with Mandelblit who closed the case against him?" Reads a statement released following a series of tweets by media man Erel Segal about an investigation conducted and closed in 2017, concerning violations of Histadrut election laws, while Nissenkorn was Chairman of the Histadrut.

The investigation did not mature into a criminal investigation, and its existence was also published at the time of the act. Despite this, the Likud statement said that "now it turns out that Mandelblit has closed a criminal case against Nissenkorn, and Nissenkorn then fired Acting State Attorney Dan Eldad, who began investigating legal issues related to Mandelblit - and appointed Mandelblit instead, who stopped the investigation against himself." It reads: "Is there a case closure in exchange for an appointment and an appointment in exchange for closing a case? Mandelblit and Nissenkorn need answers from the public - and immediately. "

Minister Nissenkorn responded to the remarks on Twitter in his own attack against the Likud. "Poor people, your attacks only strengthen me," the minister wrote. "For anyone who tries to spread unfounded lies and invent an affair, do not deter me for a moment from defending the rule of law."

Following the Likud's allegations, the Ministry of Simplification issued a statement on behalf of Attorney General Mandelblit, detailing the chain of events and clarifying that Nissenkorn was never a suspect and that there was no justification to open a criminal investigation against him. The statement said police examined the Histadrut elections in 2017 and October that year. The head of the Investigations Division recommended to the then State Attorney, Shai Nitzan, to end the treatment of the matter, "and this is because an investigation did not find any evidentiary basis that justifies opening a criminal investigation."

According to the announcement, last May, Mandelblit met with the head of the PLO, and issues arose in the State Attorney's Office. Among other things, the police recommended from October 2017 not to open a criminal investigation, a matter that was re-raised before the ombudsman in the face of Nissenkorn being appointed minister. The ombudsman asked to verify whether the recommendation not to open an investigation is still valid.

After the matter was examined once again, the statement said, the head of the PLO informed the ombudsman that there was no change in the recommendation, and that no evidentiary basis was found to justify a criminal investigation. The treatment must be completed and the matter shelved. The ombudsman, according to the Ministry of Simplification, accepted the recommendation.

The statement from the Ministry of Justice further states that "for the avoidance of doubt, and in order to prevent incorrect publications, we emphasize that Minister Nissenkorn is not a suspect and was not suspected of any offense, and no investigation has taken place in his case." In addition, they clarified that "the sequence described above, which is mainly in internal consultations of various law enforcement agencies, was not naturally conducted in the open and therefore was not made public, and in any case was not brought to the attention of Minister Nissenkorn."

The attack on Nissenkorn follows a series of briefings against Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, who is accused of trying to thwart the annexation and application of sovereignty agreed in the coalition agreement, and the Likud now claims he is pushing for elections to undermine Ganz and try to sow conflicts at the top.
