A memorial plaque in honor of Shaul Tchernichovsky was unveiled yesterday (Thursday) in Mikhailivka, Ukraine, the birthplace of the Hebrew poet.
Israel's ambassador to Ukraine, Rabbi Yoel Leon, unveiled the memorial plaque on the date Tchernichovsky's 145th birthday was celebrated. The board was established on the initiative of the head of the local council and Rabbi Arentroy, a Chabad emissary and chief rabbi of the Zaporozhye region, and with the assistance of the Israeli embassy in Ukraine.
On the occasion of the event, Tchernichovsky's "Say There Is a Land" was first translated into Ukrainian, and was read at the event by Ambassador Leon. He emphasized the importance of using the Hebrew language as part of the Shivat Zion movement: "I was very excited as a state representative to read the poem in the remnants of the shtetl in which Tchernichovsky was born, which thus helped establish our state."
