(CNN) - Some Holocaust-denying graffiti was found at a memorial center in a town in central France, Oradour-sur-Glane Mayor Philippe Lacroix reported.
Speaking to CNN affiliate BFMTV, Lacroix said the president of the Center de la Memoire, or Center of Memory, informed him on Friday that the word "liar" had been painted over the word "martyr" on the monument and the phrase "when the truth".
The mayor said police are looking for those responsible for the graffiti, but it was obvious to him that it was clearly "support for a denier."

The town of Oradour-sur-Glane was the site of a brutal massacre in World War II when German troops destroyed the entire town and killed its residents on June 10, 1944. A total of 642 people died.
The Elysee issued a statement in which French President Emmanuel Macron “condemns this indescribable act in the strongest possible terms. He gives all his support to the mayor and the municipality. He assures them that everything possible will be done to bring those responsible for this act to justice. " On Twitter, Macron commented "Nothing can make us forget the memory of our 642 martyrs from Oradour-sur-Glane."

The country's Prime Minister, Jean Castex, added on Twitter: “With anger and dismay I learned of the degradation of the Oradour-sur-Glane memory center. To stain this place of refuge is also to stain the memory of our martyrs. Every effort is made to ensure that the perpetrators of these heinous acts are brought to justice.
