  • More and more often, corona * patients who have already recovered are suffering from the long-term effects of the disease.
  • The most common complaints are shortness of breath and extreme tiredness .
  • In Hanover there is now a "post-Covid ambulance" for such patients.
  • Basic  facts about  the corona virus * and the corona news from Germany can be found here. We also offer you the current number of cases in Germany on a map  .

Hanover - In Germany, more than 200,000 people are now considered cured. They were all sick with Covid-19 . Some of them seriously, others had a milder course . However, many of them still do not feel completely cured even after weeks and months. Former infected people often complain of tiredness , shortness of breath and taste disorders . Recently there has been a center in Hanover for patients who suffer from the long-term effects of corona disease.

Corona long-term consequences: Patients are not taken seriously by their treating doctors

For many corona patients, martyrdom often only begins after the illness. Even with mild courses, Covid-19 can have effects on the organism. Vessels are damaged by inflammation, the lung tissue can change and the immune system can become totaloversteer. It is especially bad if these patients are not taken seriously by their treating doctors. “In general medical practice, they are more likely to be dismissed as crazy,” says Professor Tobias Welte from the Hannover Medical School ( MHH ) on tagesschau.de . That is why there has recently been a “post-Covid ambulance” at the MHH , in which patients from all over Germany are treated. Professor Welte estimates that "one to three percent" of all corona infected people struggle with such long-term consequences. Extrapolated to the whole of Germany, several thousand people are affected.

More and more corona patients who have "recovered" according to @rki_de suffer from long-term effects, mostly shortness of breath and long-lasting fatigue. For this my switch today - and why the new increase among the infected is only partly due to more #Corona tests https://t.co/EdgRWQDR09

For many patients, the symptoms * after surviving corona infection are very different. Often they suffer from shortness of breath and shortness of breath . In the computer tomograph (CT) one then sees a “frosted glass-like opacity” of the lungs, says Welte . However, this condition may improve over time. “It's slow, but it usually changes for the better,” says the professor. Other patients suffer from persistent tiredness - also called "fatigue". Those affected also have odor and taste disorders or fatigue of the arm and leg muscles. “It is not entirely clear what the cause of this lethargy syndrome is,” says Welte , but it seems that the immune system of those affected is permanently in disorder. "The muscular performance just goes down unbelievably."

Corona: long-term effects of Covid disease - the number of those affected is uncertain

Compared to Welte , studies from Great Britain or Italy assume a much higher number of people affected. However, mainly patients with a severe course were examined there. 74 percent of those infected with Covid-19 at Southmead Hospital in Bristol suffered two to three months later still from shortness of breath and extreme fatigue . Italian researchers found in July that 44 percent of the corona patients they surveyed still had symptoms after two months. 53 percent of them suffered from "fatigue", 43 percent complained of shortness of breath and 27 percent had joint pain . Only about 13 percent of those who were previously infected showed no symptoms after two months. (tel) * Merkur.de is part of the Ippen-Digital network.

Scientists do not agree on how long the coronavirus will keep the world in suspense. Nevertheless, the WHO has now issued a prognosis. The Robert Koch Institute has now investigated where in Germany the probability is highest of being infected with corona.
