INTERVIEW - The President of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France (Crif) reacts to the act of vandalism perpetrated last Friday at the entrance to the ruins of the martyr village of Oradour-sur-Glane.


LE FIGARO. - The desecration of the Oradour-sur-Glane memorial does not at first glance concern the Jews. Yet you react. Did you hesitate to do it?

Francis KALIFAT. - I was outraged by this abject act. It is quite natural to condemn. It's spontaneous, I didn't ask myself whether or not I should react, especially since the Crif fight is not Judeo-centered.

Some might accuse you of "recovering" this misfortune of Oradour ...

There is no recovery! Faced with such abjection, I react as a human being, as a Frenchman and as a Jew. Three elements of my personality which lead me not to remain inert and to demand, once again, zero tolerance against revisionism, which is poisonous.

Don't these negationisms have different purposes?

There is no difference between a Holocaust denier and a denier from Oradour-sur-Glane or another genocide. They are the same, which feed negationism
