Pompeo's visit to Israel is part of a more comprehensive trip by a senior government official to the region, during which he will also visit Sudan and the United Arab Emirates. He is expected to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as with Defense Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Bnei Gantz and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi.
Morocco's official position supports a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with East Jerusalem being the capital of the Palestinian state. Morocco and Israel began low-level diplomatic relations in 1993 after the signing of the Oslo Accords. Rabat, however, suspended this relationship after the outbreak of the second intifada in 2000.
