In the early hours of the morning on Sunday, the authorities decided, as ORF.at reports, to relax the extremely strict border controls. Carinthia's governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ) said that because of the imminent danger he had ordered that only random checks be carried out on transit travelers: "The focus is on human welfare."

Holidaymakers are leaving Croatia en masse - the tourism industry is suffering

Update from August 22, 4:21 p.m.: The rising corona numbers in Croatia, as well as the travel warnings for the country and the risk ratings for certain regions, hit the country's tourism industry particularly hard. Numerous guests have already left - many reservations have already been canceled, the state broadcaster HRT reported on Saturday. Most of the holidaymakers come from Italy , Slovenia , Austria and Germany and these same countries warn their citizens against a trip to the holiday destination on the Adriatic.

"Unfortunately we see that guests are leaving from countries that have put us on a red list," said Filip Kulusic from the Croatian Adriatic International Club tourism company. "People leave for many reasons - family, politics, work," Kulusic continued. "Ultimately, they want to be home and safe."

Corona in Croatia: The tourism industry is one of the most important economic sectors in the country

With almost 20 percent of the gross domestic product, the tourism sector is the most important part of Croatia's economy . It is particularly bitter that the country only opened its borders to tourists on July 1st and could actually close again now. And that although the season in the popular holiday destination on the Adriatic actually goes until October.

Now there will be new restrictions in Croatia from Monday to contain the corona virus. The measures, which should initially exist for 14 days, include restrictions on bars and cafes as well as private events. Guests are only allowed to have their drinks and snacks outdoors. A maximum of 50 people are allowed at funerals and weddings. At private parties only 20 people.

Update from August 22nd, 2:20 p.m.: Croatia is considered the new Corona hotspot . First Austria issued a travel warning - then the German government reacted. Since August 20, the counties of Šibenik-Knin and Split-Dalmatia are considered risk areas.

Coronavirus in Croatia: Another higher number of new infections than the day before

In the past few weeks, the number of people infected with corona in Croatia has risen continuously. The current figures (data as of August 22, 2:00 p.m.) also show that the number of new infections continues to rise. 306 new cases were registered - 41 more than the previous day. The capital Zagreb and the coastal region of Split-Dalmatia are still hardest hit.

The increased risk of infection in holiday countries also has consequences for Germany. On Saturday (August 22), over 2000 new infections were reported for the first time since April. According to the current status report of the Robert Koch Institute, this is also due to travelers, because “the new cases are spread across Germany and are increasingly occurring among travelers returning”.

Croatia: Returners bring coronavirus to Germany

The state of Baden-Württemberg also reports increased numbers of infections from vacationers. According to the State Health Office, more than 1402 people have been suspected of being infected abroad since mid-June . In the past two weeks, every second Corona case - 837 cases - in the southwest was probably imported from abroad. According to the authority, Croatia (242) and Kosovo (200) were at the top of the likely infection countries in these two weeks , followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina , Turkey and Bulgaria .

Corona in Croatia: A travel warning now applies to popular holiday destinations

Update from August 20, 4.15 p.m.: The number of new corona infections in Croatia continues to rise. According to official figures from the state government, a total of 255 cases were added within the last 24 hours. The day before, there were still 219 (see update from August 19, 4 p.m.). That may not sound like a lot, but given the size of the population and especially the fact that Croatia was barely affected by the pandemic for a long time, it is worrying.

The new data currently results in 1,689 active cases. For comparison: In Germany , with more than 20 times as many inhabitants (83 million compared to 4 million), 14,428 people are currently affected by the virus - that's about eight times as many as in Croatia .

Corona in Croatia: After classification as a risk area - a travel warning now applies to popular holiday destinations

Update from August 20, 12.55 p.m .: The Foreign Office (AA) in Berlin has now issued a travel warning for the corona risk areas in Croatia . The travel warning has been in effect since Thursday for two southern administrative districts, the so-called Šibenik-Knin and Split-Dalmatia counties . "The Covid 19 infection rate was low in Croatia for several weeks, but has recently increased sharply," says the AA website. In the two affected areas in Croatia, the incidences are currently more than 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over seven days. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) had previously classified the parts in Croatia as risk areas.

Croatia: Two regions now corona risk area

Update from August 20, 11:56 a.m .: The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has put Croatia on the list of risk areas. In Croatia , the counties of Šibenik-Knin and Split-Dalmatia are considered risk areas (since August 20th). Large parts of the holiday areas on the central Adriatic coast of Croatia are therefore considered risk areas. The Federal Foreign Office has initially not issued a travel warning for parts of Croatia. However, it is considered likely that the AA will issue a travel warning for the holiday regions concerned.

The classification as a risk area has consequences: Returning travelers have to go to home quarantine until a negative corona test is available.

Update from August 19, 4 p.m.: The number of new infections continues to increase in Croatia . The Croatian government reports 219 new infections on its official homepage (data status, August 19, 2:00 p.m.). This results in 1,520 active cases. The day before, 199 new cases were registered, which indicates a rising trend in new infections.

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control has also updated its statistics for Croatia. In the last 14 days, 37.7 corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants were registered there. In the morning the value was still 33.4 (see first report). However, Croatia does not reach the limit value defined by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) , which leads to classification as a risk area. To do this, more than 50 infections per 100,000 inhabitants must be reported within seven days.

On the website of the Foreign Office it says about the pandemic situation in Croatia: “The  COVID-19 infection rate was low in Croatia for several weeks, but has recently increased sharply and has reached values that are on average above those of spring. Regional priorities so far have been the capital and the surrounding area of Zagreb , Slavonia and the Split-Dalmatia County . "

Will Croatia become a corona risk area? Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg rush forward

First report from August 19, 12:53 p.m .:

Stuttgart / Munich - More and more travelers returning to Germany from Croatia are infected with the coronavirus * . This development is putting pressure on the federal states and the federal government to respond with mandatory tests or restrictions. The southern federal states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg , which are most affected by infected holidaymakers in Croatia due to their location, called on the federal government to act on Tuesday.

Croatia soon to be a new risk area? Söder and Kretschmann call on the federal government to act

The Prime Ministers Winfried Kretschmann and Markus Söder  agreed on a corresponding step on Tuesday, said a spokesman on request in the Stuttgart State Ministry. Kretschmann did not understand that this decision had not yet been made in Berlin .

If a country or region is classified as a risk area by the federally owned Robert Koch Institute (RKI) , this means that a corona test is mandatory for those returning to travel . A home quarantine must be observed until the result is available. The central criterion for classification as a risk area is in which states or regions there have been more than 50 newly infected people per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days .

Coronavirus in Croatia: numbers of new infections arouse concern at Söder and Kretschmann

The number of new infections reported per day in Croatia is currently not showing a decreasing trend. 199 new cases were recorded on Tuesday (August 18). The map published on the official Corona website shows that the Croatian capital Zagreb and the coastal region of Split-Dalmatia are particularly affected.

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control publishes a value for all European countries that shows the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within 14 days. The value for Croatia is 33.4. Even the 14-day value is thus well below the limit value defined by the RKI. The Croatian 7-day value is likely to be significantly lower.

Spain is currently already considered a risk area. The 14-day value is 132.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and thus tops the list - followed by Luxembourg (98.6) and Malta (98.3). Germany has a number of 15.3.

Research into the coronavirus * keeps scientists around the world on their toes. There is still hope that the coronavirus will mutate for the benefit of humans. According to a virologist, there are now signs that this has already happened. A new study deals with the question of why an infection causes a disturbance of the sense of smell and taste - and provides interesting results. The coronavirus could be contagious even earlier than previously thought. Swiss researchers want to have gained new knowledge about the unnoticed infection.
