Twenty-seven former Republican members of Congress, including former Senator Jeff Flick, supported Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on the first day of the Republican convention.
Reuters quoted Biden's campaign as saying in a statement that the 27 former members of Congress joined the "Republicans with Biden" initiative organized by the Democratic candidate's campaign to encourage Republicans to support him.
According to a campaign statement, former members of Congress cited President Donald Trump's corruption, destruction of democracy, his extreme disregard for moral values and the urgent need to put the country back on track as the reasons for such a move.
Flick, a former Arizona Republican senator whose opposition to Trump led him to retire from the Senate in 2018, was due to speak to reporters later Monday about his decision to support Biden.
Last week, 73 former Republican officials in the national security services, including former directors of the FBI and the CIA, endorsed Biden, describing Trump as corrupt and unfit for the position.
Last Wednesday, Joe Biden officially won the nomination of his Democratic party to compete with Trump in the US presidential elections scheduled for November 3.
Trump is facing sharp criticism against the backdrop of his reckless and failed policies, especially in the face of the spread of the Corona epidemic, as well as the manner in which he faced protests against racism in the United States.
