Former Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, suspected of mismanagement and embezzlement, was freed on the night of Sunday 23 to Monday 24 August, without being charged but with the ban to leave Nouakchott, after a week of questioning by the police, his lawyer said.

Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was released at around 1:30 a.m. (2:30 a.m. in France), lawyer Taghioullah Aïda told AFP. " He was not charged but his passport, which was taken from him during his arrest " on August 17 " was not returned to him ". " He is prohibited from leaving Nouakchott, " added the lawyer.
