The Republican Party convention opened tonight (Monday) and officially elected President Donald Trump as its candidate for the US presidential election in November. Trump came for an unplanned visit to the conference, which is being held on a limited basis in Charlotte, North Carolina, due to the Corona epidemic.

Trump noted the situation in the markets, telling deputies who came to vote physically, contrary to what happened at the Democratic convention last week, that if he lost to rival Joe Biden - the country would go in a "terrible direction." He said the November election was the most important in the history of the United States.

"Our country can go in a terrible direction or in an even bigger direction." Trump said the economy thrived before the corona plague, and condemned governors who continue to shut down economic activity to stem the spread of the virus. This hinted to Baiden, who said he would support further shutdowns if necessary.

Trump, who is trying to avoid being the first incumbent president since George W. Bush Sr. to not win a second term, has accused Democrats of exploiting concerns casting the Corona virus to "steal" the election. He claims the only way Democrats can win is "if the election is fake". He said similar things during the 2016 campaign, until he won.

He said Americans know how to protect themselves from the virus, and can vote at the polls, instead of voting through the mail. He reiterated his baseless claim that postal voting would lead to widespread counterfeiting, despite studies showing that counterfeiting votes is a highly marginal phenomenon. Trump said people would "cut short" votes through door-to-door passage from citizens who did not send their ballots. In addition, he argued, again without support, that there are states that do not verify the signatures on the ballot envelopes.

After a gathering of 336 deputies who voted for Trump, the Republican Party will try this week to convince U.S. citizens that Trump deserves a second term. Trump, who lags behind Biden in the polls, is waging a tough battle to win a second term, suffering from the consequences of the corona plague. The virus killed about 177,000 people in the United States, destroyed the economy and changed most of America's way of life. At the same time, demonstrations across the United States against police violence and racism continue, three months after the killing of black detainee George Floyd in Minneapolis.

In recent days there have been several demonstrations in Charlotte against the Republican president, and on the night between Sunday and Monday protesters clashed with police. Five protesters were arrested, according to police, who sprayed pepper spray on the protesters, who allegedly blocked traffic and attacked police officers. The other key parts of the conference will be held in the Washington, D.C. area, and Trump will deliver the nomination speech from the White House lawns on Thursday.
