Twelve cornerstones for a bike concept in the Tegernsee valley

If you cycle around the Tegernsee, you will encounter weak points. Just like the local SPD associations, which have now drawn up a twelve-point paper for a valley-wide cycling concept.

If you cycle around the Tegernsee, you will encounter weak points. Just like the local SPD associations, which have now drawn up a twelve-point paper for a valley-wide cycling concept.

  • Dangerous coexistence of pedestrians and cyclists.
  • More often Tempo 30 on federal highways.
  • Proof of parking space also required for bicycles.

Tegernseer Tal - Detlef Thamm (66) from the Münsterland has booked a holiday at Tegernsee for the first time this year. On the other hand, he has been on the road very often with the e-bike. He and his wife cover an average of between 4,000 and 5,000 kilometers a year. The couple enjoyed their stay in a holiday apartment in Ostin, but the bicycle infrastructure in the Tegernsee valley was a disappointment. “That's bad in many places,” says Thamm. He is particularly surprised that there are sometimes common paths for pedestrians and cyclists. Then e-bikes whizzed past pedestrians at 20 km / h: “That doesn't fit.” He finds it remarkable that an area as touristic as the Tegernsee Valley no longer promotes cycling tourism.

Common concept for the entire Tegernsee valley

Thamm hits a sore spot. The call for a valley-wide cycling concept can currently be heard in all places around the lake. As reported, the course has been set: Gmund was accepted into the Working Group on Bicycle-Friendly Municipalities (AGFK) in November 2019, Bad Wiessee is in the process of being accepted, and an AGFK team will be visiting Rottach-Egern on September 15 for the first time. One of these will take place in Tegernsee next year, and Kreuth has also put out feelers.

The SPD in the Tegernsee Valley has had the bike concept in its sights for a long time. Year after year, the comrades invite you to take a trip “Left around the Tegernsee”. After the most recent tour at the end of July, the comrades sat down again to formulate twelve cornerstones for a future concept. What is right at the top should please Thamm. "The goal and the optimal solution are clearly separate lanes / traffic areas for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians," it says. Footpaths with the additional information "cyclists free" are mostly narrow and dangerous.

Because of the healthy climate: Tempo 30 also on federal highways

One of the most critical points is likely to be the partly combined sidewalk and footpath along the Tegernsee through-road, says Thomas Mandl, chairman of the SPD Tegernseer Tal. Other key points of the SPD paper: Because cyclists often have to drive on roads, more often Tempo 30 should apply on the federal highway in urban areas. This is legally possible in health resorts with a healthy climate. Wherever possible, wheel protection strips should be drawn in urban areas. Separate cycle paths are required outside of town. In addition, the comrades advocate annual citizens' meetings on the subject of cycling so that possible improvements are constantly discussed.

Rental bike system and e-bike charging stations

Further requirements are the improvement of the signage, an app or an overview map showing e-bike charging stations and roadside assistance, as well as a comprehensive rental bike system. The SPD believes that building permits for commercial facilities will require proof of parking space not only for cars but also for bicycles. “You always want people to buy these expensive cargo bikes. But there is nowhere where you can safely put it down, ”explains Mandl. It is important to integrate the bicycle as an equivalent means of transport in a valley-wide mobility concept.

The comrades want to introduce their key points paper to the municipal councils. There, according to Mandl, the subject of cycling should soon become an issue everywhere.
