Wisconsin is preparing for a third night of protests on Tuesday after a new police attack on a black man set fire to protests against racism in the United States. Authorities in Kenosha, Wisconsin, held an emergency meeting to discuss whether they should request federal help to quell the riots that began after the shooting in the back of a young black man last Sunday. The Governor, Tony Evers, has announced that he will reinforce the presence of the National Guard to increase security at demonstrations and protect buildings.

The images were recorded on video by a passerby: a couple of policemen try to arrest Jacob Blake, 29, in Kenosha, but he ignores them and tries to get into his car, the officers keep pointing their guns at him and one of them tries stop him, but failing to do so, he shoots him in the back eight times. After the attack, dozens of people gathered to protest against the police in the same place where the man was attacked and the city authorities decreed a curfew. On Monday night, together with the protests, several looting took place and several businesses were burned in the financial district of the city.

“Basically, our city has been set on fire. Building by building. Enough is enough, ”Zach Rodriguez, a member of the Kenosha County Supervisory Board, told Reuters. In the city center, the clash between the police and the protesters after the curfew ended up setting fires in different buildings. Firefighters from more than 30 service stations came to douse the flames.

Blake is in serious but stable condition in a hospital in Milwaukee. His father has told the American press that the young man suffers from paralysis from the waist down and that doctors still do not know if it will be his permanent condition. He has undergone an operation but will still have to endure several more operations in the coming days.

The officers had come to a call for a "domestic incident", an argument between two women in which Blake intervened to try to appease her. According to Blake's family attorney, Ben Crump, Blake's three children, ages 3, 5 and 8, were inside the car when police shot him. "How many of these tragedies will it take until the disregard for black lives by the police ends?" She said in a statement. Crump also represents the family of George Floyd, who was killed on May 25 by police in Minneapolis.

The incident is the latest in a long line of cases of police violence against African Americans and takes place just three months after George Floyd's death in Minneapolis, whose case sparked a wave of protests across the country whose echoes resonate with each new. episode of police brutality against African Americans. Since then some protests have occasionally followed in Portland (Oregon) and Minneapolis (Minnesota). After the Blake shooting, the demonstrations have not spread to other states, but tensions continue in Kenosha where the young man's family is expected to arrive from Kentucky.
