Workers at a funeral home in the downtown area of Detroit, Michigan, USA were very surprised after noticing signs of life in one of the bodies transported to the scene.

The 20-year-old woman was pronounced dead before being taken by her family to the cemetery, where her body was to be embalmed for the funeral, but luckily she opened her eyes.

The woman, Tamisha Bushamp, who suffers from a variety of medical problems, was transferred from the James H. Cole Funeral Home to a local hospital. The funeral home said last Sunday they received a call to collect her body, and "upon her arrival at the funeral home, our staff confirmed she was alive and called emergency crews."

Rescuers who announced the woman's death claimed that when they arrived at the scene she was not breathing, and resuscitation operations were performed on her for 30 minutes. A doctor who was not present at the scene then declared her dead based on the information provided to him. The omission led to the opening of an investigation but the fire department and the Southfield City Police Station claimed to have acted properly. Bushamp's family hired a lawyer.

Her mother, Erica Latimour, told local media: "My heart is heavy. Someone declared my daughter dead, and she is not." She said when she spoke to the emergency crews who were caring for her daughter she was told "Madam, she is dead". Timur asked them if they were safe and they replied in the affirmative. After Tamisha was taken to the funeral home and the staff found out she was alive they called the mother and told her "she is breathing, she is alive. Your daughter is still breathing". The mother said she was "devastated that my daughter is going through such an experience. My family, her twin brother, her older brother ... I have no words."

The lawyer, Jeffrey Figer, who was hired by the family, said: "They were going to embalm her body. If she had not opened her eyes they would have started emptying her body of blood." He claims the period of time she was considered dead and did not receive medical treatment worsened her condition and could impair her ability to recover.
