Asked about his willingness to try to overthrow the minority government of Justin Trudeau at the earliest opportunity at the end of September, the former soldier and Minister of Veterans Affairs was cautious, while presenting himself as a " fighter " ready to lead the battle. .

" I will always put the interests of Canadians first and we will work together when I can " with the government, said the 47-year-old MP at his first press conference since being elected leader of the main opposition party Sunday. " If Mr. Trudeau believes he can play games with a new (Conservative) leader and force an election, we will be ready, " he added. " I think (Canadians) are fed up with an unambitious, divisive and unethical Liberal government ."

An ethical scandal

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is at the heart of a new ethics scandal after the award of a major government contract to a charity that paid several members of his family. Mr. Trudeau announced that he would submit to a vote of confidence of deputies, on September 23, his program to revive the Canadian economy hampered by the coronavirus pandemic.

To bring down the government, the Conservatives, who have been demanding the departure of Mr. Trudeau since this new scandal broke, would however need the support of at least two other opposition groups.

Erin O'Toole also explained that under his leadership, his party would extend its arms to minorities. He recalled that he was for the right to abortion, while his predecessor Andrew Scheer had been ambiguous on this issue. " Whether you are black, white or whatever, whatever your race or belief, whether you are LGBT or not ... whether you go to church on Friday, Saturday, Sunday or never, you represent a party. important part of Canada, and you have your place in the Conservative Party of Canada, ”he pleaded.

Finally, Mr. O'Toole explained that if he became Prime Minister, his government would try to develop oil exports to revitalize the Canadian economy. On the other hand, a conservative government " would not spend its time chasing trade agreements with predatory countries like Communist China ," he warned.
