The last update date: 2020-08-26 02:10Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Rome on August 25 and met with Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio. The latter referred to China as the country’s main economic partner, but emphasized to pay close attention to the impact of Beijing’s implementation of Hong Kong’s national security law.
After meeting with Wang Yi, Di Maio said that the two sides discussed how to restart the key economic partnership and described China as one of Italy's main economic partners.
He pointed out that Italy reiterated that with other European partners, it is very important to emphasize the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong based on the principle of one country, two systems. The high degree of autonomy for Hong Kong people is as important as basic human rights and freedoms.
Di Maio also mentioned that the two sides discussed the strategic economic and industrial partnership between the two countries and other issues, describing China as an irreplaceable participant in dealing with any global challenges.
Wang Yi said that China and the European Union need to strengthen relations and strengthen cooperation on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic. He also pointed out that the Cold War was a way back, and China and Italy did not allow other countries to harm other countries’ interests for personal gain.
Italy participated in the "One Belt One Road" in 2019 and was the first Western country to sign this agreement.
