A 25-year-old Algerian student committed suicide on Monday August 25 by defending himself from a university residence on the La Rochelle University campus, AFP learned Tuesday evening from the police, who did not specify the reasons for his action .

" He threw himself from a window " of a student residence managed by the CROUS, told an AFP correspondent Commissioner Eric Lortet, communication officer at the departmental public security directorate (DDSP) of the Charente-Maritime. " He had previously sent a message to one of his relatives to announce " his gesture, he continued, specifying that an investigation was opened.
The possible motivations for his taking action have not been specified. According to a source familiar with the matter, the student, who had completed his Master 1 in computer science, was highly rated. Asked by AFP, the president of the university Jean-Marc Ogier, explained that " the student had had difficulties to find an internship allowing to validate his Master 1 ", without however making any link with the motivations of the young Algerian.
" He had made a request for exemption to continue his studies in Master 2 ", which would be accepted, assured Mr. Ogier. “ There have been a lot of internships canceled because of the Covid crisis ,” he added. His body was discovered Monday around 6:30 am by an employee of the CROUS, at the foot of the residence where he occupied a room, he specified.
The drama was revealed by the rector of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine academic region, Anne Bisagni-Faure, who spoke in a press release " the tragic news of the death of a student from La Rochelle University in international mobility ", without further details .
