Live broadcast from the Knesset Education Committee
The Knesset's Education Committee will convene this morning (Tuesday) for another discussion on the issue of parental payments for the coming school year in the shadow of the Corona's limitations. The previous discussion on the issue was stopped following criticism from Knesset members that the outline does not show a significant reduction.
Due to the demand to cancel payment for irrelevant activities following the epidemic, the Ministry of Education has presented an outline that includes a partial reduction in payments related to the culture basket, graduation ceremonies, enrichment programs and voluntary purchase. According to the plan, the amount of payment for a culture basket will be reduced by 10% in relation to the amounts approved in the previous school year, in all age groups. The savings per student will range from eight to 18 shekels. Graduation ceremonies will also be held instead of graduation parties. The maximum amount to collect for them will be reduced by 50% compared to last year, and the savings per student will range from NIS 27 to NIS 100.
In addition, parents will not be asked to pay for class parties. However, the fees for lending textbooks, trips, NIS, local parent committees - will remain unchanged from last year.

Education Minister Yoav Galant yesterday accused the chairman of the education committee, MK Ram Shefa (blue and white), of not approving the outline, and claimed that he had made a cynical political move to win the sympathy of parents. Galant said that if the outline is not approved, actual parental payments are actually expected to go up. "If we do not pass things on to the education committee, then in fact the payment that the parents have to pay will increase by hundreds of shekels," the minister warned.
According to Galant, "The Education Committee is looking for a reason to quarrel for political reasons at the expense of the parent public. There has never been a procedure of this kind where the discussion on parental payments has already lasted five hearings - that is the proposal."
