Four American fighters were wounded in a confrontation with Russian troops in northeastern Syria, senior Pentagon officials today (Wednesday) admitted, according to a report by the American news site Politico.

The four reportedly suffered head injuries and concussions after Russian military vehicles collided with their vehicle in an unusual incident in northeastern Syria.

Documentation of the incident, which took place near the northeastern city of Kamishli, was circulated on social media showing the Russian military vehicle colliding with an American armored vehicle. The video also shows a Russian Air Force combat helicopter flying low over US forces.

Similar incidents in which Russian and American military vehicles chased have occurred in the past in northern Syria but so far with no casualties. Russian and American military forces are working together in the area alongside Kurdish militia forces, fighting ISIS.

The Pentagon declined to comment on documentation circulated on social media and did not provide information as to how the soldiers were injured and whether U.S. military forces responded to the incident.

In the past, American forces killed mercenaries of the Russian "Wagner" company when they assisted Assad's army forces in an attack on the Kurdish militia. But so far the Americans have avoided direct confrontation with Russian military forces and the Russians have acted similarly.

With the reduction of U.S. military forces in northern Syria that began earlier this year, more Assad and Allied forces entered and began operating in the territories held by the Turkish militia, after the Kurds authorized them to operate there for fear of a Turkish invasion.
