A lot of caution was heard in the IDF yesterday. Although the feelings were positive after a second success in a row to thwart a Hezbollah attack, they also knew that nothing really ended, and the account on the northern border remained open.

The incident itself was a failure by Hezbollah. This time, too, the organization was looking for a target that would be below the threshold of escalation. Therefore, it chose a pattern of action that could control its results. Unlike an explosive device, a rocket or an anti-tank missile that could not hit several people, sniper fire could be targeted and ensure only one soldier was hit. Under the eye, the same revenge that Nasrallah has been seeking to carry out since his organization operative was killed in an air force attack at Damascus airport five weeks ago.

Such sniper squads have been stationed along the border for several weeks, in search of a target. So far, the IDF managed to completely avoid supplying them to work. Even yesterday he acted under the threat of this strict, so it was decided the only force observations - sent to repair one of the devices that are located on the border near the Israeli settlement of Manara - operate in the dark.

Power follow recognition of the threat. It moves Secretly, but at one point one of the soldiers was required to expose part of his body to replace the broken equipment. The Hezbollah sniper, who was waiting in one of the front houses in Kfar Hula, spotted him and fired two bullets. Both missed. Professionally it is the most complicated shooting a sniper can have. , Which he sees only for a brief second), but for an organization that has been waiting for weeks for this moment it is a bad result and a resounding operational failure, no less.

Hezbollah will not give up deterrence, despite the severe blow it has suffered

"The IDF took time to understand that this was the end of the incident. In the first moments they thought it was a diversion to another operation in another sector, so the residents were instructed to enter protected areas, the border was closed, and dozens of light and smoke shells were fired into the air. L responded symbolically by attacking two observation posts of the Green Without Borders organization - a seemingly humanitarian organization, but as Israel has previously revealed - an organization that serves as a cover for Hezbollah intelligence gathering activities on the border with Israel.

This response tried to send a double message to Hezbollah. The first is that Israel is not interested in escalation, and therefore chose marginal and unimportant goals for the organization. And the second, that Israel is responding in Lebanese territory, for the first time since January 2015, and hence that it will also respond to any future damage to it - with increasing intensity, depending on the severity of the damage.

These messages are intended to warn Hezbollah, which is still seeking revenge for the death of its operative in Damascus. After failing at Mount Dov and failing at Menara, the organization will return and look for another opportunity, hoping to succeed for the third time. No one in Israel has any doubt about this: if the organization did not give up revenge even after the disaster in Beirut, there is no chance that it will do so now.

This will require the IDF to maintain high alert on the northern border also in the future, knowing that it must do so while enabling the preservation of the civilian fabric of life in the sensitive period of late summer, the coming holidays, with peak tourism and businesses trying to recover from the Corona crisis. And as we saw yesterday - in the end the goals will emerge. We must hope that even then the result will be successful for the IDF, as in the last two events.
