More and more people who tested positive for the corona virus in Germany have probably become infected in Croatia. Now the number of new infections has risen to a record high.

More and more people who tested positive for the corona virus in Germany have probably become infected in Croatia. Now the number of new infections has risen to a record high.

  • More and more people who test positive for the corona virus * in Germany have probably become infected in Croatia.
  • The number of new infections has now risen to a record high (see update from August 27, 3:36 p.m.).
  • Croatia is not yet fully classified as a risk area by the Federal Foreign Office - but there is a travel warning.

Update from August 27, 3:36 p.m .: At the beginning, Croatia was comparatively little affected by the corona pandemic * - but since the country opened its borders to tourists , the number of infections has risen sharply. The authorities now set a record for Wednesday: 358 new cases of infection were recorded on the day - more than ever before. Around a third of them were found on the southern Adriatic coast of Croatia, which attracts a particularly large number of holidaymakers.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) (see original notification ) classified the regions Sibenik-Knin and Split-Dalmatia as well as offshore islands such as Brac or Hvar and thus a large part of the Croatian holiday areas as risk areas , which is why the foreigner Office now warns of tourist trips to the regions.

Although there were no strict restrictions , the number of new infections in Croatia every day never exceeded 100 for months . In mid-May, almost no new cases were registered. Most recently, the number of new infections was over 200 every day .

Corona hotspot Croatia? RKI statistics speak for themselves - more and more infections from returnees

First report from August 26th: Berlin - Especially in the summer months, the coastal regions in Croatia are a popular destination for German vacationers . A fact that is not affected by the increasing number of infections in the country on the Adriatic . It was only last week that the Federal Foreign Office reacted to the epidemiological situation in the suburbs and explicitly warned against traveling to the Šibenik-Knin  and Split-Dalmatia regions . But the situation in Croatia does not seem to be easing for the time being.

Coronavirus: Croatia new frontrunner in RKI statistics - more and more infections from returnees

More and more people in Germany who are positive for the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirustested, were infected with it during a stay in Croatia . As the daily situation report from the Robert Koch Institute * shows , 940 people who tested positive were very likely infected in the popular holiday destination on the Adriatic in the past week. For comparison: in the same period, 74 people were registered in Germany who were probably infected with the coronavirus in Italy.

Croatia now ahead of Kosovo and Turkey:

In Croatia , more people registered by the RKI * were infected with the coronavirus in the past week than in Kosovo or Turkey, which two weeks ago were the top performers in these statistics. While the vast majority of those who tested positive continue to be infected in Germany, almost 15 percent of the registered infections * in the past week were very likely to be due to returnees from Croatia.

Coronavirus: does the Federal Foreign Office declare Croatia a risk area?

It remains to be seen how the Foreign Office will react to the apparently worsening situation in Croatia . One possibility would certainly be to declare the whole of Croatia a risk area in order to prevent further trips to the Balkan region . The Austrian government already declared Croatia a risk area last week in order to avoid further infections by returnees and thus the impending second wave *to prevent. Shortly before the federal-state meeting with Chancellor Merkel on the corona crisis, the federal government is already taking a measure. fd
