French President Emmanuel Macron telephoned his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Thursday August 27 to discuss the situation in Mali and Libya in particular, the Algerian presidency said, after a series of exchanges at the beginning of the summer.

" The two presidents examined the development of relations between the two countries and notably referred to the latest developments in the situation in Libya and Mali, " the presidency said in a statement.
Algiers, which hosted in 2015 the negotiations that led to a ceasefire agreement between the government and Malian rebels, reacted strongly to the coup d'état in its neighbor on August 18, calling for elections and " Respect for constitutional order ". In Libya, another unstable neighbor with whom it shares nearly 1,000 km of border, Algeria is trying to assume a role of mediator between rival camps, but without international support.
Several successive telephone exchanges in June and July, followed by the handing over by France of the remains of 24 Algerian fighters killed at the beginning of French colonization in the 19th century, outlined a rapprochement between Algiers and Paris, the former colonial power.
