"Uncle West." Matthews with one of the lionesses

A well-known environmental activist in South Africa was killed after two white lionesses he had grown attacked him.

According to the BBC, West Matthews ran a popular safari cabin complex in Limpopo County, and during a trip he made with them, one of them began to be aggressive towards the other and later drew her attention to it. Relatives of "Uncle West" said he may have been attacked as part of a very dangerous game. His wife, who was following them in the car, tried to distract the lionesses, but it was too late.

The two were anesthetized and after the attack, and taken to another compound before being released into the wild. They were rescued as puppies from an enclosed compound where they were raised for hunting purposes. They reportedly killed a man who worked at a nearby compound in 2017 after breaking into their compound.
