The White House and the Democrats resume contacts for the stimulus plan as another million lose their jobs

2020-08-27T14:04:37.989Z

Republicans propose a new stimulus package that unblocks negotiations in Congress by eliminating the $ 1,200 aid check for families.

The rate of people who have lost their jobs weekly and who have applied for state aid is still over a million, while the Democrats and the government are preparing to restart talks for a new aid package, after several weeks without arriving to agreement.

According to the data provided this Thursday by the Labor Department, 1,006,000 people filled out the forms to request aid for having lost their job during the week that ended on August 22. The figure is slightly lower than that of the previous week, which was revised down to 1,104,000.

More than 14.5 million Americans are receiving traditional unemployment benefits, which is more than 1.7 million from a year ago. A sign that many American families depend on aid checks to stay afloat.

After weeks of meetings without reaching an agreement for a new economic aid package, the Democrats and the White House are expected to resume talks on Thursday .

The leader of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, will meet with the Chief of Staff of the White House, Mark Meadows, to restart the attempts to reach an agreement that allows to deliver new aid to the millions affected by the coronavirus.

The failure of the previous meetings was solved by the president, Donald Trump, with four executive orders that establish some measures of economic relief such as the extension until the end of the year of the additional unemployment benefits to millions of Americans, although the amount of the weekly payment signed by the president is $ 300 and not $ 600.

Republicans, meanwhile, are working on a smaller package of measures that they hope to pass to Congress this week, according to several sources consulted by CNBC.

This plan considers a proposal of roughly $ 500 billion that addresses only areas of bipartisan support: expanded unemployment insurance, a new round of small business loans, money for schools, and COVID-19 testing, treatment and vaccines.

The plan, however, leaves out the option of a new check for $ 1,200 that goes directly to help American families.

In addition, the proposal raises weekly benefits to $ 400 for those who have lost their jobs. Democrats want that figure to be the same as the one provided in the first aid package that expired in July, or $ 600 a week.
