A taxi driver suspected of murdering his daughters was arrested yesterday (Thursday) after being wanted in the United States for 12 years. An order directing the arrest of the driver, Yasser Abdel Said, was issued a day after his daughters, 17-year-old Sarah Yasser Said and 18-year-old Amina Yasser Said, were shot in 2008.

The suspect, who was born in Egypt, entered the FBI's ten most wanted list in 2014. Nearly seven years later, he was arrested in Justin, Texas, as well as his two relatives - his son Islam Said, and his brother Viasim Said, who face charges of concealing a fugitive criminal. The FBI has announced that the 63-year-old will soon be transferred to Dallas County.

"The Task Force on Violent Crimes in Dallas, led by the FBI, has been working tirelessly to find Yasser Abdel Said," said Dallas FBI Agent Matthew Desarno. "The experienced investigators never gave up on the journey to find him, and swore they would never forget the young victims in this case."

The girls' coach, Patricia Evans, was happy to hear about the arrest. "Now the girls can rest on their laurels in peace," she told local media.

According to the suspect, on the day of the murder Said took Amina and Sarah for a ride in a taxi he owned, claiming he was taking them to dinner. He drove them to Irving, Texas, where he shot the girls in the cab. The two died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Prior to the incident, a relative told police that the suspect allegedly threatened to "cause bodily harm" to Sarah, after she went on a date with a non-Muslim man. The girls' second-degree aunt, Gail Gertral, described their deaths as "murder against the background of desecration of the family."

In August 2008, the Texas District Court issued a federal order against him for flying illegally for the purpose of evading trial. FBI agents have continued the chase ever since, and after "12 years of frustration and dead ends," they finally caught him on Wednesday. "The arrest brings us one step closer to justice to Amina and Sarah," Desarno said.

In their official statement, the girls' family said the announcement of the suspect's arrest brought with it "tears of supreme happiness and shouts of victory." The statement added that the family "felt relieved to finally begin a period of justice" after "a promising life was taken".
