Wartenberg –No, the frogmen who literally got to the bottom of Lake Thenn on Wednesday were neither on the trail of a crime, nor did they dive for the explosive legacy of World War II. Rather, police divers from the Technical Operations Unit (TEE) of the Dachau riot police in the northern district of Erding completed an exercise. The next training session in the region will follow next week - a search for bodies in Notzinger Weiher.

The exercise at Wartenberg was led by Andreas Köberlein. He reports that tow diving was being practiced. "The colleagues were pulled over the ground on a pole behind a boat at a depth of four meters," reports the chief inspector of our newspaper. Previously, the water was examined with a sonar device for dangerous obstacles. The towing technique is always used when a larger area in a body of water has to be searched.

The police divers are always called when a missing person turns into a police operation, when it is to be expected that a swimmer is no longer alive. Köberlein also reports that “we are also looking for pieces of evidence, such as weapons or a stolen safe”. The TEE divers also come when ammunition is found. If the going gets tough, experts from the State Office of Criminal Investigation join in.

There are three TEE groups in Bavaria - in Munich, Dachau and Nuremberg. “We are also moving out nationwide,” explains the chief inspector. The TEE officers are not only active underwater. They also operate the water cannons and clearance vehicles. Last but not least, loudspeaker trucks to warn the population or to steer demos are part of this task force. ham
